Oskaloosa, Iowa (population 11,523) is seeking candidates for the position of Chief of Police. The current chief is retiring after serving for over thirty years, the last 26 years as Police Chief. Oskaloosa is the county seat and is located in southeast Iowa. It is one hour from Des Moines, the state capitol, and sixty minutes from Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa.


The city is a diverse, micropolitan community offering big-city amenities. It is the home of William Penn University, a private liberal arts university, and, multiple national and international industrial exporters and family owned businesses. The department has 17 full-time officers and two civilian staff to provide public safety services. The department uses bicycles, foot patrol, K-9 patrol, and vehicle patrol to cover the city’s 7.98 square miles.



• Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


• Five years supervisory experience in a public law enforcement agency

Salary range and benefits

• The Police Chief is a FLSA exempt position

• $72,130 to $90,200 annual

• Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and meet the licensing standards established by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, www.state.ia.us/ilea within one year. The successful candidate must pass a pre-appointment physical examination including a drug screen.


• Residency required within 3 miles of the city limits established within 90 days after appointment.

The Police Chief reports to and is appointed by the City Manager.  The appointment is approved by the City Council.
