Deputy Sheriffs Mark Burbridge and Pat Morgan were shot at the Pottawattamie County Jail in Council Bluffs as they returned two inmates after a court appearance. Deputy Sheriff Burbridge was killed and Deputy Sheriff Morgan was injured. One of the inmates used a concealed key to remove his shackles then obtained a firearm from the van and shot both deputies. He then stole the van and fled from the jail. He attempted to carjack a citizen and shot him. He then abducted another citizen and forced her to drive him from the scene in her vehicle. After pleading guilty to first-degree murder, Wesley Correa-Carmenaty was sentenced to life in prison without parole plus 50 years.
