On July 29, 2019, at approximately 3:25 PM, Iowa City Police Officer Michael Clark responded to a report of a shoplifter in the area of Starbucks Coffee at 11 Highway 1 in Iowa City, Iowa.  Officer Clark was able to locate a woman that matched the description given by the store employees of the suspect.  The suspect refused to stop when requested by Officer Clark and kept walking away. 

As Officer Clark approached the suspect, she remained uncooperative, becoming more belligerent and swearing at him.  From near her many bags, the suspect picked up a metal mobile power outlet stand. Officer Clark took the stand away from her and turned to set it down.  As he turned back to the suspect, the suspect was pointing a gun a few feet away from his face.  The suspect then shot the gun several times directly at Officer Clark. Officer Clark drew his service handgun and returned fire, striking the suspect in the hand. Despite having sustained a through and through wound to his left cheek, Officer Clark and a responding officer were able to take the suspect into custody.
