Description
The City of Council Bluffs (Population 62,799), is seeking candidates for the position of police chief. The current chief is retiring after serving 40 years in law enforcement, with the last 9 as Council Bluffs Police Chief. Council Bluffs is the county seat of Pottawattamie County, and the 10th largest city in Iowa. It is located on the east bank of the Missouri River, across from Omaha, Nebraska. Requirements
Education Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice/Public Administration/Business or related field. A Master’s Degree is not required, but will be weighted accordingly along with other credentials. A combination of education, training and experience may be considered in lieu of a bachelor’s degree Experience: At least seven (7) years of experience in police operations, with a successful record of progressively more responsible supervisory experience in law enforcement operations, management, and administration. Experience at the rank of captain or above, along with (large) budget experience is preferred. Graduation from one of the national police executive leadership schools such as SPI, SMIP, Northwestern, or the FBI National Academy is preferred Certification: Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and meet the licensing standards established by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy https://ilea.iowa.gov/law-enforcement-officer-academy/. Iowa Police Officer Certification within 120 days of hire. Must be able to obtain Iowa/NCIC Certification. The successful candidate must pass a background check, physical examination, psychological examination, and drug screen Salary and Benefits: The Police Chief is an FLSA exempt position. Salary is dependent on candidate’s education and experience.
