WILLIAM "BILL" MEYER (1941-2017) LOCAL 5 CEDAR RAPIDS POLICE

William “Bill” Meyer, 75, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at his home surrounded by family.

A memorial service with military honors celebrating Bill’s life will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, January 7, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Heather Hayes officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel, Iowa. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 pm Friday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories  Stateroom.

Survivors include his wife, Paula; son, William (Lori) Meyer of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Rhonda (Jeff) Gandy of Aitkin, MN; son, Matthew (Sarah) Todd of Bristol, WI; grandchildren, Sean Gandy, Jessica Gandy, Chelsea Leonard and Samantha Meyer; two great grandchildren, Addison Gandy and Avery Leonard; soon to be born great grandson, Jackson Mitchel Roers; siblings, Robert (MaryJo) Meyer of Whittemore, IA, Linda (George) Bargman of Hoover, AL, Richard (Paulette) Meyer of Meridian, ID.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Myrtle Meyer and his first wife, Evelyn Meyer.

William Meyer was born October 3, 1941 in Whittemore, Iowa, the son of William and Myrtle (Barber) Meyer. Bill served in the U.S. Marine Corp. from 1960-1963. Upon being discharged, he joined the Cedar Rapids Police Department where he served for 20 years where he helped establish the C.R.P.D. Honor Guard. Bill and Paula were married February 16, 1985 in Cedar Rapids, IA. During those years, he and his wife Paula owned and operated the Stained Glass Gallery for 22 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served as an ordained elder, deacon and sang with the chancel choir. Bill will always be remembered for his  “vice-like handshake”.

Memorial donations may be given in his name to the First Presbyterian Church, 310 5th St. SE, Cedar Rapids, 52403 or the donor’s charity of choice.
