RICHARD CHARLES "RICK" STEVESON (1943-2017) LOCAL #12 WATERLOO POLICE DEPARTMENT

WATERLOO -- Richard Charles "Rick" Steveson, 74, of Unionville, Mo., formerly of Waterloo, died at home Monday, July 17, of pancreatic cancer.

He was born July 17, 1943, in Marshalltown, son of Donald and Eva Samson Steveson. He married Kathie Mestad in Marshalltown on Feb. 14, 1970.

Rick graduated from Sac City Community High School in 1961 and then briefly attended Ellsworth Junior College before entering the U.S. Air Force where he served from 1964-1968, stationed mostly in Panama. He then graduated from Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo with a technical degree in police science. He served as a police officer for the city of Waterloo, holding the positions of patrol, school liaison, detective sergeant and patrol sergeant, from 1970-1999. During this time he also worked many part-time jobs, including security at Sears from 1976-2004. Rick and Kathie lived in Waterloo until 2008 when they built their retirement home on Lake Thunderhead in Unionville.

He was a member of Evansdale AMVETS, Unionville Post 34 American Legion, Iowa Chiefs of Police, Iowa State Police Association and Waterloo Police Protective Association.

Survived by: his wife; a daughter, Tamica (Kieran) Comito of West Des Moines; a son, Scott (Stacie) of Johnston; his grandchildren, Caiden and Trey Comito and Braxton and Brylie Steveson; two brothers, Ron (Sonnee) of Phoenix and Steve (Steph) of Indianola; a sister, Sandee Hanson of Mesa Ariz.; a brother-in-law, Bruce (Marla) Mestad of Dallas; and five nieces, three nephews, seven great-nephews and three great-nieces.

Preceded in death by: his parents; a sister; a brother-in-law; and a niece.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 21, at Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home, Unionville, with burial in Iowa Veterans Cemetery columbarium in Adel at a later date. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, July 20, at the funeral home.

Memorials: may be directed to the PC Cafe Resource Center or to the charity of one’s choice and may be entrusted with Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.

Rick was a caring, generous, fun loving, happy person who enjoyed his friends, family and extended family and the many acquaintances that were involved in his life. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
