James T. Purcell, 87, of Dubuque passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at Church of the Nativity, with Rev. James Miller officiating. Entombment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Dubuque Post 6. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 pm Sunday at the Egelhof Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Road where there will be a wake service at 5:30 p.m.

Jim was born June 9, 1930 in Dubuque, son of John R. and Susan (Reiter) Purcell. He married Betty Ann Cain May 22, 1954 at St. Patrick Church, Dubuque. She preceded him in death Nov. 22, 2008.
He graduated from the former Loras Academy in 1948. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Pickaway APA 222 Troup Transport during the Korean Conflict.

Jim served on the City of Dubuque Police force for 31 years, retiring as a Captain in June of 1985.
Jim was an avid Cubs fan.

He is survived by two daughters, Susan Purcell, of Dubuque, Kathleen Purcell, of Clive, IA; two sons, Mark (Judy) Purcell, of Ontario, Canada; Craig Purcell, of Cascade; four grandchildren, Holly, Amanda and Brendan Purcell and Taryn (Cory) McCarthy; two sisters, Marie Jogerst, of Dubuque and Catherine “Kitty” Novis, of Great Falls, Montana; and his significant other, Rosene Moreland, of Dubuque and her children, Dennis (Vickie) Moreland, Michael (Bev) Moreland and Lori Steffen.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and William Purcell and a sister, Margaret Connor.

A James Purcell Memorial Fund has been established.
