Edward J. Rand

January 26, 1927 - October 26, 2018

West Des Moines - Edward J Rand passed away peacefully Friday, October 26, 2018. He was born January 26, 1927 in Des Moines, Iowa to Anthony and Zula (Cardamon) Rand. 

Visitation is Monday, October 29 from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Anthony Church 15 Indianola Road, Des Moines, Iowa, with a rosary recited at 7. Funeral Services will also be held at the Church Tuesday, October 30 at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa.

Ed was a lifetime member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from Dowling Catholic High School in 1945 where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball. 

After High School, Ed enlisted in the US Army and served proudly for two years. After returning from active duty, he married his high school sweetheart Palm Ausilio (Rand). Ed and Palm were married October 3, 1948 and shared over 50 years of marriage together. 

From 1951 to 1956 he owned and operated, with his father, their family neighborhood grocery store. In 1957, Ed joined the Des Moines Police Department where he rose to Sergeant before retiring in 1984. 

Ed enjoyed his New York Yankees, Notre Dame Football, hanging out with friends at Pal Joey's and spending time with his family. 

He is survived by his 13 loving children: Eddie (P.R.) Rand, Tony (Terri) Rand, Ronnie (Ginny) Rand, Donnie (Terri) Rand, John (Toni) Rand, Pam Vanderbur, Cathy (Chuck) Wallace, Sandy (Tony) Fatino, Mary (Scott) Creger, Deborah (Jack) Schulte, Lisa (Rich) Linderman, Joe (Misty) Rand and Michael Rand. Ed and Palm were blessed with 37 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his Aunt Margie Funaro along with many beloved nieces and nephews. 

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mary Webber and his beautiful wife Palm.
