CHARLES 'CHUCK' THOMAS GEARHART 
August 10, 1933 - November 22, 2018



Charles "Chuck" Thomas Gearhart, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died at his home Thursday, Nov. 22, 2018. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Murphy. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. A vigil service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit with the family Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday after 9 a.m. at the church. 


Chuck is survived by his wife, Amy; three sons, Steven of Cedar Rapids, John (Mary Beth) of Light House Point, Fla., and Scott (Sue) of Mount Vernon; two daughters, Julie (Jim) Kinkead and Jill (Cory) McGarvey, both of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren, Catrine, Cassandra, Jason, Stephanie, Cameron, Sean, Caitlin, Emily, Matt, Liz and Abby; 10 great-grandchildren; and five sisters, Velma Loeffler and Ruth Gearhart, both of Cedar Rapids, Grace (John) DeReyke and Jean Murtha, both of Victor, and Pat Enneking of Marion. 


He was preceded in death by three sisters, Sharon, Mary Margaret (Roger) Baseman and Dorothy (Wayne) Tipton; two brothers, Ralph (Velma) and Allan (Betty); and three brothers-in-law, Walter Loeffler, Jim Murtha and Ken Enneking. 


Chuck was born Aug. 10, 1933, in Cascade and married Amelia Upah on July 6, 1957, at St. Joseph Church in Chelsea. In 1977, he retired after 20 years from the Cedar Rapids Police Department and then worked at Rockwell from 1985 to 1995. He was a founding member of St. Jude Catholic Church and the Cedar Rapids Police Protective Association. Chuck was an Air Force veteran and served from 1952 to 1956. 


Chuck loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, and being a coach for his sons' baseball teams when they were in school. He always was proud to say he was a Cedar Rapids police officer. He enjoyed playing cards, supervising construction projects, having coffee with his buddies and cheering the Dodgers on to victory. 


Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
