Waukee - Retired Des Moines Police Sergeant, Roger F. Stiles, age 72, of Waukee, died May 1st, 2021 surrounded by family after a battle with cancer. Roger was born on September 3rd, 1948 in Des Moines, the son of Lawrence and Alma Stiles.

Roger was raised in Des Moines, graduated from North High School in 1966, and went on to attend AIB in Des Moines. He briefly worked for Bankers Trust, before pursuing a lifelong dream of becoming a police officer. Roger first became a reserve officer for the Des Moines Police Department in 1979 and graduated from the police academy in 1987. He proudly served for the Des Moines Police Department for 35 years. One of his greatest achievements as an officer was successfully lobbying for legislation to add blue lights to police vehicles statewide.

Roger served on the Board for the Des Moines Police Burial Association and was most recently on the Board of Trustees. He was also a member of the Des Moines Police Department's Honor Guard.

In addition to his love for law enforcement, he was also passionate about NASCAR, especially for his favorite drivers, Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr. He also loved the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Bears.

Roger is survived by his three children, Heather (Ryan) Weaverling of Ankeny, Cory (Maria) Stiles of Waukee, and Todd (Mphatso) Stiles of Malawi, Africa; and nine grandchildren, Tristan and Sydney Weaverling, Kristian Sullivan-Tonche, Ian and Brodie Stiles, Chase and Tate Stiles and Kiiweni and Micah Stiles. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Lawrence and Alma (Zimmerman) Stiles.
