Larry J. Bode, 77, of Polk City, a 25-year retired police officer, died on Sept. 20, 2023, at Mercy Hospital and laid to rest in a family plot near Lewis.

Larry was born on June 6, 1947, to Bill and Dorthy (Wooley) Bode of Griswold and was the oldest child, now survived by his sister Judy Borkowski of Harlan. Larry attended Country School outside of Griswold until the fourth grade, when the family relocated to Atlantic, graduating in 1965. He took a job with the Rock Island Railroad, and a love for trains continued for the rest of his life.

Bode served the Polk City Police Force from March 1981 through March 2006. Sergeant Bode received a standing ovation for serving the community's annual appreciation of 25 years of dedicated service. He was a generous community member and a great big brother, dedicated to keeping track of geology and enjoying family reunions at Lewis Lake, now Cold Spring State Park. Larry loved sending cards for any occasion, birthdays and holidays. He was a great neighbor and friend to many.

A memorial honoring Larry will be held at the United Methodist Church, 1421 W Broadway St, Polk City, on Friday, Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. Contributions may be made in his memory to the NP Comet Cupboard in Polk City.
