Brent was born on August 25, 1930, in Sioux City, Iowa to Clarence and Olive (McKinney) Hedlund. He was raised in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School. Brent attended classes at the University of Iowa before joining the United States Air Force, where he served his country in the Korean War. After receiving his honorable discharge, Brent returned to Sioux City, where he was a meat-cutter at a grocery store for a short time. He then found his true calling as a police officer with the Sioux City Police Department, where he served for 26 years. Brent married Judith "Judi" Smith on October 29, 1965 in Sioux City. Judi was the love of his life and he missed her dearly after her passing in 2019.

In addition to being a policeman, Brent was an artist, having a spare career painting signs in the Sioux City area. He was an avid collector of antiques: cars, car emblems, and guns. He was a past member of the Sioux City Antique Car Club and loved going to meetings and showing his cars at local car shows. Brent had a contagious sense of humor and could often be found telling amazing stories and spouting clever "one-liners." His grandsons especially loved his stories and jokes and have wonderful memories of spending time with him doing "boy stuff." He was a wonderful provider, working hard, always doing what needed to be done, and keeping his family safe and comfortable. In recent years, Brent loved listening to the music of his generation, and the music he loved is one thing that his family and many caregivers will never forget. Brent would often tell us how happy he was and how lucky he felt to have all the love and care that his family and caregivers provided.

Brent was a proud member of Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux City.

Brent is survived by his daughter Dawn (David) Dvorak of Sioux City; son Brad (Ann Greene) Hedlund of Sioux City, and son Jan (Val) Hedlund of Colorado; grandchildren Dawson Dvorak, Drew Dvorak, Ryan Hedlund, and Garrett Hedlund; several great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces.

Brent was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Judi; and sister, Dawn Mitchell.

Casket Bearers for the service will be David Dvorak, Dawson Dvorak, Drew Dvorak, and Mark Skaff.
