Larry was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on August 1, 1942, to Cecil H. and Lillian (Timmens) Davis. He grew up in the Madrid and Johnston, Iowa areas until his family moved to Clear Lake, and later to Mason City. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1960.
Larry enjoyed the outdoors from an early age. He and Mick spent countless hours hunting and fishing together as kids, and he carried many fond memories of growing up with his five brothers and two sisters. Larry learned the drywall business at a young age when his father started Davis Drywall. After graduation, he worked construction, at Decker’s Meat Packing, and for the City of Mason City, first with the sanitation department and later as a police officer. He served as a police officer until an accident while on duty forced him into early retirement.
Larry and his first wife had two sons, Roland and Todd Davis. On September 9, 1983, Larry married Peggy at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, and together they raised her son, Jim Barkema. Although Roland and Todd were grown, they lived at home with them for a short time. Larry and Peggy later purchased and remodeled an acreage in rural Mason City, where they made their home for the next 20 years.
Because the acreage was located in the Clear Lake School District, Jim made friends there, which led the family to attend Agape Church in Clear Lake. During that time, they attended an Easter musical at E.B. Stillman Auditorium where Larry went to the altar for salvation, accepting Jesus as his Lord and Savior. In 1995, Larry and Peggy began attending Open Bible Church in Clear Lake, where they became members.
Larry faithfully served the church in many ways. He served as an elder, led a ministry helping provide meat to the community, helped Peg in the church kitchen with whatever she involved him in, drove the van for elderly members and children, and participated in a ministry of love to residents at Oakwood Care Center. He also served on mission trips to India and Mexico.
Larry loved spending time with Roland and Todd while they were growing up, especially taking them hunting and fishing. After his sons were grown, Larry and Peggy enjoyed hunting together. Along with Jim, they spent many days fishing on the lakes, often around the Red Wing area. They also enjoyed treasure hunting together, searching for antiques for Larry and Peg and toy tractors for Jim. Through the many auctions they attended over the years, they formed countless friendships. In 2003, they moved to their current home in Mason City.
Larry deeply loved his grandchildren and treasured time spent with them, whether fishing, visiting Adventureland, traveling to Branson, watching movies at home, or playing mini golf. His greatest desire was that their children, grandchildren, and family would live with Jesus in their hearts so they could all spend eternity together in Heaven.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Peg; their sons, Roland Davis and his children, Amanda, Andrea and their children, as well as Grace and Cole; son, Todd Davis, his wife Joy, and daughter Karissa (Dalton) Barnabo; son, Jim Barkema and his son, Alec Barkema; siblings, Mick (Kathy) Davis, Rick (Debbie) Davis, Becky Eskildsen, and Jack Davis and their families; special nieces and nephews whose parents, Linda and Bart Froning, as well as James “Tim” Davis, previously passed away; mother-in-law, Dixie Shafer; Peg’s sisters, Glenys and her family, and Sherry.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roland and James Davis; sister, Linda Froning and her husband, Bart; great-grandson, Devlin Obregon; father-in-law, Ralph Shafer; and nephew, Brent Eskildsen.
