Around noon on September 25, 2017, Chief Behning was seriously injured when he attempted to deploy stop sticks to end a vehicle pursuit involving Davenport and Blue Grass Police Departments, that was entering his city.

The perpetrator identified as 20-year-old Logan Shoemaker, driving a stolen garbage truck, led police on a chase with speeds in excess of 80 mph through multiple jurisdictions.  Shoemaker saw Chief Behning and his squad car at the intersection of Highway 22 and Mississippi Street in Buffalo.  Shoemaker steered directly at the squad car ramming it and pushing it over Chief Behning. 

Shoemaker was found guilty of attempted murder, willful injury causing serious injury and eluding while participating in a felony.  Shoemaker was sentenced to up to 68 years.
