Officer Landry Blunk
Bettendorf Police Department
Date of Incident 05-21-2025

On May 21, 2025, at approximately 0126 hours, Officers were dispatched to 2602 Cypress Drive, Bettendorf, Iowa for a domestic disturbance and that someone had been stabbed. Patrol Officers Blunk and Morrisey arrived at the residence. Officer Blunk encountered a child at the doorway of the residence, and two additional children on the stairway just inside the residence. Officer Blunk was able to remove the children from the residence for their safety. Officer Blunk heard yelling in the basement about the police arriving at the residence and the sound of a firearm slide rack. With information that someone had been stabbed and multiple people were believed to be in the basement, he opened the basement door and observed Jamey Myles holding a handgun. Myles turned toward Officer Blunk, raised the gun, and fired two bullets, striking Officer Blunk in the forearm and hip area. Officer Blunk told Myles to drop the gun and returned fire, striking Myles, and causing Myles to drop the firearm. Officer Blunk exited the residence and began administrating himself medical aid.

After administrating himself medical aid, Officer Blunk continued to stay on scene and direct additional responding officers where to go and what equipment was needed. One of the bullets that had struck Officer Blunk continued and struck Officer Morrisey in the thumb. Officer Morrisey, Myles’s mother, and all three children were all standing near the front door and in the line of Myles’s gun fire. Officer Blunk’s return fire after he had been wounded prevented Myle’s from continuing to fire in the direction of not only Officer Blunk, but Officer Morrisey and innocent civilians. After being struck in his strong hand thumb, Officer Morrisey was still able to draw his firearm using his support hand and cover the threat area as Officer Blunk retreated.

Despite his injury, Officer Morrisey held his position at the front doorway until he was relieved by additional responding officers. Myles had been wounded but was still moving and in proximity to his firearm and Myles was now the only person in the basement. Officer Morrisey then assisted with checking Officer Blunk for additional injuries. Officer Morrisey then drove himself and Officer Blunk to an area hospital for medical treatment since the scene had not been cleared for Medic/EMS and the few additional officers on scene at the time were needed to secure the residence. Additional responding officers entered the house and rendered Myles medical aid. Myles was then transported by ambulance to the hospital.

Upon discharge from the hospital Myles was criminally charged by the Bettendorf Police Department with the following:

· Attempted Murder of a Peace Officer
· Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Air/Blood Flow Causing Bodily Injury
· Domestic Abuse Assault with Intent to Inflict Serious Injury
· Child Endangerment
· Child Endangerment
· Child Endangerment
· Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon
· Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations

At the time of this award, Officer Morrisey has returned to full duty and Officer Blunk remains on light duty as a result of his injuries sustained in the incident.
