BOARD SPOTLIGHT
By Judy Kellen, Jr. Director

Greetings from the entire Iowa State Police Association (ISPA) Board of Directors. I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer and had a great Fourth of July. Unfortunately, the holiday means summer is half over. The football season will be here in less than 7 weeks.

When I joined the board in October, I was optimistic we would be able to keep the Rabiner Treatment Center (RTC) viable after the ranch was approved to treat children from Minnesota. Sadly, the number of children admitted to the ranch wasn’t sufficient enough to keep the doors open. In December, the board made the difficult decision to close the ranch. In May, we made the tough ─ but realistic ─ decision to sell the ranch. Steve Hansen made contact with one of the eventual owners on his drive home from that meeting. We received an offer and proposed a counter offer. Ultimately, we agreed on a price and the ranch was sold to Lizard Creek Ranch in June.

SECRETARY-TREASURER UPDATE
By Ryan Goecke, ISPA Secretary-Treasurer

I hope this finds all of you well and enjoying another Iowa summer. Fall, and the football it brings, will be here before you know it!

Here is an update on the condition of the Iowa State Police Association (ISPA): as of July, our membership stands at 3,231. This number holds steady; we have had a few members choose not to renew their membership and there is the usual turnover with the locals. We have lost 26 members to death so far this year. Over the long run, we average about 30 deaths per year. The last three or four years have been exceptional with numbers in the mid to upper 30s. I hope this trend is short-lived. We continue to pay a $1,500 death benefit for eligible members. Remember to update your beneficiary. You’ll find the form on the ISPA website under the ISPA Membership tab.

OFFICER ASSISTANCE FUND
By David McFarland, ISPA 1st Vice-President

I’m sure by now most of you have heard of the very unfortunate closing and sale of Rabiner Treatment Center (RTC). The real estate closing for the sale of RTC took place on June 29, 2018. It was a very difficult decision made by the RTC board but one that had to be made. While there is much sadness in the closure of RTC, we should take solace and pride in knowing RTC was able to help thousands of kids and their families since founded in 1962.

For more than 30 years, it has been a tradition for the locals and members to make donations to RTC at the annual Iowa State Police Association (ISPA) conference. Without this generosity, Rabiner would not have been able to stay open for as long as it did. We should be proud of all the kids, families and communities that these donations helped for so many years.

THE BENEFITS OF ISPA MEMBERSHIP

As we hit the halfway point of the year, it’s a good time to remember the advantages of being a member of the Iowa State Police Association (ISPA). From important lobbying efforts, protecting benefits, the Iowa Police Journal and providing the opportunity to catch up with members of the law enforcement community at conventions and competitions, the power of ISPA membership provides a tremendous value.

One those valuable benefits is insurance from California Casualty, proud provider of the ISPA endorsed Auto and Home Insurance program.
