2023 National Police Week-NAPO Legislative Day

By Judy Kellen- ISPA 1st Vice President

The Iowa State Police Association (ISPA) was represented in Washington, D.C., during National Police Week, May 14-21, 2023.  President Becki Sammons, Second Vice President Fred Lepley, along with myself, went to D.C. to honor the fallen officers and lobby for Iowa Law Enforcement. We arrived in Washington on May 10 so we could attend the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) legislative day on May 11.

On May 11th President Sammons attended the NAPO breakfast, listened to NAPO’s legislative priorities, and received our legislative information packets.  After that Andy Edmiston from NAPO, had scheduled several visits for us with the Iowa Congress Senators and Representatives.

2023 IOWA LEGISLATIVE END OF SESSION REPORT
By Fitzgerald, Smith and Associates, Lobbyists

The 2023 Legislative session ended May 4th with the approval of a Sine Die resolution (adjournment) shortly after noon. It was a very contentious session with many battles between the two chambers, as well as the Governor’s office. This session proved that politics will always find its way into the creation of policy. Even though Republicans control the Governor’s office and the Legislature, moving policy between chambers and receiving the Governor’s approval can still be very difficult.

The division of political philosophies seemed to grow wider between the two Legislative chambers this session than in years past stemming from a couple controversial policy bills introduced by the Governor’s office. Educational Savings Accounts and the Government Reorganization bills were introduced early in session and were viewed quite differently between the House and the Senate.   CONTINUE READING

IOWA LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY

By Brady C. Carney, Director

Greetings from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy!

I hope this finds all of you safe and well. As the new Director, I am honored and humbled to play a role in helping equip Iowa’s law enforcement officers with the necessary tools to positively impact their communities, to promote public safety, and to ensure they return home safely at the end of their shift. My pledge is to serve all of you with thoughtful consideration, consistency, and an understanding of the challenges we collectively face.

I began my new role on March 6th, which was week 9 of the Basic Academy for the 307th & 308th. Starting while the Basic was at full-tilt allowed me to observe and evaluate the ILEA staff, assisting instructors, recruits and our overall product on day one.     CONTINUE READING

ZANOTTI ARMOR HELPING KEEP ISPA MEMBERS SAFE!

In 1988 Mark Zanotti wanted a large safe in a loft area of his home but did not want to deal with the hassle of trying to move it. Most people would buy a safe and then try to figure out how to get it in place.  Not Mark, his wife suggested he just make a safe in pieces, carry them up and weld it together.  Thus the idea was born and Zanotti risked everything creating Zanotti Armor of Waterloo, Iowa.  Almost 35 years later, as the saying goes the rest is history!

After many successful years of business and building hundreds of safes, in 2018 Zanotti sold his company to successful Cedar Valley businessmen,  Skeet Miehe and Travis Heddens. The new owners are carrying on the legacy of Zanotti Armor and have expanded the business.

Zanotti safes are unique, in that they are modular in nature and assembled wherever the customer desires. Unlike many other safe manufacturers, Zanotti Armor handcrafts each of its safes right here in the U.S., focusing on precision details to provide a higher level of security, a more vibrant appearance, and a greater durability.  They take great pride in dealing directly with their customers and making sure they get their safe the way they want it.

Zanotti Armor is a proud supporter of law enforcement and a premier sponsor of the Iowa State Police Association.  If  you would like more information you can reach them at 319-232-9650 or Travis@zanottiarmor.com
