PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
By Judy Kellen, ISPA President
Sioux City Local # 7

I hope everyone had a great time at the 91st Annual ISPA Conference in Coralville.  On behalf of the entire board and all the ISPA members who attended the conference, I want to thank and congratulate Past President Becki Sammons and Iowa City Local 16 for all their hard work in hosting such a great conference.

In October, board members from ISPA, Iowa Professional Fire Firefighters (IPFF), and our lobbyists met with Senator Jack Whitver to discuss House File (HF) 687.  The purpose of HF 687 is to ensure work-related injuries for 411 members are treated similar to the workers’ compensation benefits provided to other employees in the State of Iowa.  We discussed all the work and compromises reached by both associations, Metro Coalition and League of Cities.

BOARD SPOTLIGHT
By Ryan Anderson Director
Local # 55 West Des Moines

Greetings to everyone and hello from West Des Moines, Iowa.  First, I wanted to extend my thanks to all the Iowa State Police Association (ISPA) members and especially Iowa City for making the 2023 ISPA conference a success. With the holidays coming upon us, I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and will have a Merry Christmas.  This is a special time of year where we can spend extra time with our loved ones.

I was recently elected to the ISPA Director position, in October, at the Annual ISPA Conference in Iowa City.  Let me share a little about me. I was born and raised in Des Moines where I graduated from Lincoln High School in 2001.  I have been married to my wonderful wife Kate for 15 years, and we have two boys, Gavin (11) and Axel (8), who keep us busy with hockey and Tae Kwon Do.

ISPA Pension Board Update

By Eric Snyder- MFPRSI Board of Trustee
Local # 19 Ames

If we haven’t met, I am one of the two ISPA appointed representatives for the MFPRSI Board of Trustees and currently work as a Police Officer in Ames. I also served on the ISPA Board from 2007-2015. I have a passion for serving fellow first responders, so I was honored to be asked to serve in this new role.

In my first year on the MFPRSI Board I have been very impressed with the knowledge of the staff and their dedication to maintaining the System for both the members and employers. They are a consistent resource and I encourage you to take advantage of the outreach schedule and website. There are a lot of resources on the website that will answer many common questions. I’ve been part of many conversations at a briefing/roll call table or car to car with another officer in a parking lot where pension benefits have been discussed.  CONTINUE READING

ISPA 2023 SECRETARY-TREASURER REPORT

By David McFarland Secretary-Treasurer
Local # 12  Waterloo

It is hard to believe another year is almost over, and the holiday season is upon us.  If you did not attend the 2023 ISPA Annual Conference hosted by Iowa City Local # 16, you missed a great conference.  Their hard work really showed.  The conference was amazing, and the training was top notch.  Local # 16 has set the bar high for next year’s conference hosted by Sioux City Local # 7.

At the conference this year the delegates approved raising membership dues.  The new dues are $50 for members who are still working and $35 for members who are retired and $250 for a paid-up active membership.  Historically ISPA dues have not seen an increase in 7 years, the last time being in 2016.  By now your local and/or you should have received a reminder that your 2024 ISPA dues are payable January 1, 2024.  Remember dues are considered delinquent at the end of February.  If you have not received anything or are not sure if your dues have been paid, please send me an email.
